By the way, official portraits of all the Secretaries since 1849 hang on the walls of the 6th Floor of Main Interior. Next time I’m there, I check out Stuart and see if he looks like this photo – or Joseph.

Secretary Carl Schurz who served 1877-81, bore a striking resemblance to my first boss at Interior, beard and all. Occasionally, and mysteriously, Shurz’s portrait would be moved to be near my old boss’s office. That’s what we do for laughs in the bureaucracy. No time for grand conspiracies.
