  1. Beautiful photograph! Is that the temple during its “dark” period, before the effects of the coal smoke were washed off? Or is it just the contrast to the white of the snow?

  2. I think it *is* sooty here — the horizontal elements (whatever they’re called) are darker than the flat spaces between them, the way the sooty temple looked. When it rains and the granite darkens, you notice it first on the flat spots, so I don’t think the darkness here comes from being wet.
