Church Presidents Timeline, 1959

By: Ardis E. Parshall - August 02, 2013

The Deseret Sunday School Union prepared this timeline for children in 1959. It is, I think, intended to help children memorize the names and order of the presidents and nothing more. You’ve no doubt seen similar lists of American presidents, or planets in the Solar system, or states in the union, where the factoids accompanying the name are meant only to help the kids distinguish one name from another, not to give any depth of understanding. With that perspective, I’ll bet it was effective. Kids have not only words but simple pictures to associate with the words, emphasizing stories or events — pioneers, scriptures, temples — they are already familiar with.

. .
. . . . . . . . . If we were to update the timeline with more recent Church presidents, what one or two factoids or images would you suggest?

  1. For Pres. Hunter I owuld suggest a picture of a Temple recommend and make mention of the fact he was in a band.

  2. Those would be memorable facts, and ones kids could grasp, Cameron.

  3. For Monson, a group of widows and a dove.

  4. I like the hand-drawn ones much better. For President Benson, I’d suggest a drawing of the Book of Mormon, and a sheave of wheat to represent his career in Agriculture.

For President Hinckley, the conference center and an old-fashioned radio microphone.
