I look forward to hearing your paper.

So glad that you were able to fill in some of the holes and find out more of his origins, and especially how JFS communicated the adoption to Levira. My paper at MHA this year will address this in the context of JFS’s frustration over his extended family relationships.

Hope the continuing hunt continues to be fruitful!

He had agreed to adopt another trucker’s son, and called his wife to meet him there. She learned the story and took the new son home that day.

There are lots of kids I wished I could have brought home from Argentina. But actually doing it is a lot different than just wanting to.

And Kevin has taken us along on the kind of family research puzzle that most of us have, or at least a variation. He shows us that answers can be found — and also shows that patience and creativity and persistence are part of it.

As good as everyone’s intentions may be, adoptive and foster families can present particular difficulties.

This is continuing to be a fascinating series on the Smith family, Kevin.

That at least puts him on the radar while you continue to research.

Edward drops out of sight from 1863 until 1869, when he begins appearing in JFS journal entries.

And I can’t find any record of him at all. Not there, and not at the Mormon Migration database either. It appears that he needs “finding” in those places as well.

Happy hunting, Kevin.

Ultimately, Joseph F. Smith’s second wife, Julina, is who Edward considered his mother. Julina married Joseph in 1866, 3 years after Edward’s adoption. Levira divorced Joseph in 1868.
