I was too busy to read any of these before Christmas, but was hooked at the first one, and got caught up last night. It reminds me a little of "Mildred Pierce" except the characters have more morals.

Also, when buying your teen daughter a party dress, "swishy and appropriate" are the opposite of each other.

I'll be looking forward to reading the final installments on schedule. ;-)

I like that, despite her missteps, Joanna understands young people and takes active steps to help them succeed. I mean, instead of just telling Penny should couldn't go with Tom, she understood their feelings and helped them with an alternate plan. Back with that obnoxious brat Connie, she short-circuited the girl's anticipated complaints about the childishness of the second proposed game by announcing that Connie could look at a book if she didn't want to play, before Connie had a chance to whine. In other words, she doesn't just say "no" to a bad situation, but takes charge of the situation to steer it in a new direction.

Hooray! As soon the story mentioned "Tom", I thought of the drunk kid from the previous chapter. I'm glad Joanna stood her ground to both Tom and Kent.

And, like Amy, I don't know what she was thinking leaving her young children in the first place. There are two kids younger than Penny!

Joanna watched him go, his head held arrogantly and high.

Better to call off the wedding, painful as it might be, than be married to a man who isn't concerned for the welfare of her children. (Honestly! How could she even consider marrying him after how he reacted to the first school conflict! And why would he think it a good idea to take a mother away from her minor children for half a year?? To quote Lina Lamont, "What do they think I am? Dumb or something?")

Turns out her engagement was sorta like that kiss in the last installment--terrific build-up but ultimately nothing by a fading memory. No "there" there.
