I think that part of what draws you in is that besides the human characters, the family as an entity is made a character, one who is adjusting and changing with the loss of the father, deciding what it can keep and what it will do in a different way, and what will be utterly different. I noticed it in the first chapter, but thought it was the dead husband was the real identity. Unless the next ones change drastically, and he starts being more central to it, I am sticking with that feeling.

All good stories have that extra draw that is never spelled out as being central, but never the less, is the character that draws readers in as they root for this family to stay as a family, and recognize the growth and changes, while still retaining that attraction to the reader.

Oh, I hope Joanna has success! And I'm mad that Ardis already has typed her future and it's already determined and there's nothing I can do about it. And I want some baked beans. Yum! (I'm really into this one.)
