That's what it took, though -- it came one chapter per month! In this case, I think the kids were lucky. Most of the time the magazines published serials so that the very last chapter appeared in January -- you had to resubscribe to the magazine in order to find out how your story ended!

I'm really glad that so many people enjoyed this, judging by comments here and on earlier installments. As usual, I'll post single short stories for a week, then another serial. Then the serial after that (starting in January sometime) will be the 10-part sequel to this one, with further adventures of Prudy and John.

I've enjoyed this very much! How often was the serial originally published? I was imaptient for each chapter. It would be tough to wait a month for the next issue!

Well, I wasn't too surprised that Prudy and John's parents were already on their way, after the last episode. ANd while I love the desert, I am not so sure that I would want to live in Tuba City rather than Salt Lake City. Besides, in another 10 years the Bureau of Indian Affairs is going to redraw the reservation boundaries, and the Mormons in Tuba City will have to close their woolen mill and move, leaving only the cemetery, so maybe they shouldn't get too attached to the place.

While the ending was a bit too neat and tidy, overall I would rate this the best of all the serials we've seen so far, with none of the attendant weirdness of the Haven's eugenics infused story, or Hugh Cannon's racially uncomfortable South Seas saga. And I understand that there are many more in the queue.

I am glad to hear that Purdy and John Wayne will be getting back together with their folks.

My great grandfather and his family were involved in the settlement of the Tuba City/Moencopi area in the 1870's.

FYI--- the author of the story was a cousin of President Hinckley
