Wow, what a great episode. Knowing a bit about Lee’s Backbone, this is actually one of the best descriptions of how the crossing and the climb over Lee’s Backbone was done. Nothing to complain about here, just a pretty accurate portrayal of the climb up and over that mountain. Even those who used the lower ferry, which avoided some of the roughest part of the original climb over the mountain, still had just as long and steep descent down the other side.

Now you’ve got me thinking that I need to do a guest post on Lee’s Backbone, with some pictures of how the road looks today. It is still pretty scary.

Catching up on a few things. The writing does blend geography and story together fairly well. Not so sure about plot.

I love the detail of the journey in this story, how it’s woven naturally into the narrative without making me feel like I’m being “taught” history.

I like this story because the lessons are learned by Prudy doing the right thing, not by her doing something wrong and we have to suffer with her. Most children’s stories are not like that.
