I was born in Norway in 1945. My father, Thorkild Wersland along with my mother Inger and my 2 other siblings, at the time, emigrated to America in 1949 with my maternal grandparents Magness and Ragna Brunsvik. I was blessed to return to Norway at age 20 to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. When I arrived in 1965, I was blessed to meet Grandfather Gustav and was received as a beloved grandson. Much of what he has written here, he told me in person during these several opportunities I had to be with him. I found Him to be a man of great wisdom and faith. One day I asked him if he would be willing to put on his uniform from his army days and allow me a photo. My father, Thorkild had told me never to ask such a question due to its sensitivity and may cause emotional stress. But I began to feel very close to my grandfather and not only found him willing but proud!!! I still have that wonderful photo and memory. These stories and memories are still told among my five sons and two daughters…..and 24 grandchildren today.

I am the namesake of Gustav’s 1st wife Hjordis who was the 1st convert as Gustav was baptized after she died from complications of diabetes after giving birth to their 4th child long before WWII. I am very proud of their courage and thankful for their lives and example.

The damage to the rail lines from bombing suggests that his rail journey was later in the war, after the Allies’ bombing offensive had become more effective in disrupting the German railroads. And that would match with the Italians’ presence in the POW camp–after their 1943 surrender.

It is odd that his story is so different from the one recorded by Bro. Babbel.

They destroyed much of the installation and four seaplanes, but the ship was so badly damaged (I have his photos) she scarcely made it home.

When they ceased to be the Germans’ allies in September 1943, the Germans felt betrayed and infuriated, and murdered or imprisoned every Italian soldier they could get their hands on.

Wersland’s account. Stettin, for example, is not on the Elbe River–it’s on the Oder. And there’s no place that the two rivers meet.

And what were the Italians doing in the prisoner of war camp? They were the Germans’ allies, at least until 1943.
