Acrostic

Acrostic

unsigned

Just as thy spirit could have wish’d to pass:
Over the wicked thou hast triumphed now,
Soaring to mingle with the martyr’d dead.
Even thy voice shall swell the cry of those
Praying for vengeance on earth’s fatal race —
“How long, O Lord, ‘ere this, thy will be done.”

(1844)

  1. Just curious, was this poem entitled “Acrostic”?

  2. Yes. Not a very creative title, but there it is.

  3. David, this was a common title for this type of poem.

In fact, there was another LDS poem about Joseph Smith with the title “Acrostic on the …” which published earlier this same year, before the martyrdom instead of after it as this one was.
