Plaza, he’s referring to the lessons to follow in this 1948-49 series of Relief Society discussions. I’m posting them in order each Tuesday morning, with the next chapter due tomorrow. Whether we agree that the analysis is “full” or not, these following lessons indicate what Elder Durham intended. Stay tuned!

I sometimes wish there was more intellectual substance to our current lesson manuals, too. But I repent quickly. Orwell’s famous remarks about “smelly little orthodoxies” seem apropros, and they’re what you get when intellectualism displaces teaching by the Spirit.

With 20+ years of formal education under my utility belt, it pains me to admit that.

Agreed Vader (can I call you “Darth”?). I realize that modern Church lessons need to be easily translatable into many languages, they need to be cross culturalable (is that a word), and the Church wants them to be easy for everyone to understand. But I wish they made us stretch a bit more.

What strikes me about this lesson — whether or not you agree with all the arguments and conclusions — is that it would almost certainly be regarded today as having been written at a college level. Yet it was intended for the general membership of the Church.
