Speaking of sharpening the snark, I am reminded of Ivy Williams Stone's preoccupation with Luther Burbank and his horticultural exploits. I recently discovered that he is responsible for introducing the Himalayan Blackberry to the West Coast, which has take over just about every bit of wild space left west of the Cascades here in Western Washington, and is officially designated as a noxious weed now. You go, Luther!

I'm glad of that. The risk, as far as I'm concerned, of posting those older clunkers is that we get so used to rolling our eyes and sharpening our snark, and we might keep up that pattern when there's really quite a decent piece of fiction, like this serial. This has the "nice" quality of a 1960s of '70s sitcom, perhaps, but as you point out, the problems are realistic. (A lot more realistic than, oh, I don't know, missing noses, mysterious trunks containing old violins, hidden diamonds ...)

This is a refreshing change from some of those older historical artifacts that we've suffered through (okay, had great fun with). In spite of the obvious cultural references to the late 60's the problems here are much more accessible to us even after some 50 odd years, with elderly parents needing care, two income households struggling to deal with the financial strain of losing one of the paychecks.

And Rosemary does seem to have done a lot of growing up over the weekend. There were a couple of odd sentences here and there, but this seems to be so much better written, although showing a bit more of the hand of correlation than the older clunkers we've read. This actually sounds a bit like my own household at about the same time frame, with an older brother in college, me in high school, and my mother trying to juggle work and hospital visits while my other brother was recovering from a serious auto accident. Liking this so far.

I don't think it's Dale Kilbourn, but I don't know who it is. I'll find out and post that (shoulda done it right from the start). This artist's Barnabee Bumbleberry cartoons are some of my earliest memories from the Children's Friend.

I like Rosemary. She's my character doppelganger. I almost always react badly when I'm surprised by something that upsets my plans, but give me a little while to work it out in my mind and I'm usually reasonable. Usually. Okay, sometimes.

Rosemary seems to have grown up between Friday and today.

I love that you included the illustrations. Is that Dale Kilbourn? I remember as a child, studying that artist's style and trying to copy it. His girls were the prettiest.
