Well this is good:

The schools were free! Blessed freedom of statehood. All children were equal in the public schools, even the books were provided. All children had to do was study. They learned to read, to paint, to cipher, to spell, they even had a little dancing. Imagine, spending money to teach how to dance! They taught music — down town there was a free library. Peter brought books home for the girls. It cost nothing. The door was open to rich and poor alike.

Please, please, please bring this kind of world back...

Poor, poor Sister Stone! :)

This is an 8-parter, so you have TWO MORE WHOLE episodes to look forward to. Much cheaper than narcotics, I suspect.

Okay now I have read it. Your comment, Ardis, about a dream while coming out of anesthesia, does not do this justice. I think Ms. Stone might have been channeling Ken Kesey or Timothy Leary before they were, well, doing whatever they were doing.

I'm wondering what the Relief Society sisters of the time were supposed to make of this? I'll bet the correlation committee has copies of this posted on the walls of their conference rooms, with the headline "Only You can Prevent This from happening again!"

Shades of Edgar Allen Poe or H. P. Lovecraft here with the melted wax flowers, the degeneration of the Whitman property into disrepair and decay. I'm with you all that I am not going back to look for where the second section of land came from, but I suspect that it had something to do with the lack of a good editor, or rather even a bad editor.

Now I really am thinking, "Make it stop!" Only one more episode, hopefully?

I will also note that the Mormon Literature Database at BYU does not mention this story as part Sister Stone's body of work. Oh, wait, Mormon Literature. Now I get it!

Frankly, I don't remember the second section of land, either! I do remember the gravel, something about a point/hill rather than a pit, that would come in useful some day if the railroad came through that direction, but I don't care enough, either, to go back and hunt up the second section. It's like trying to make sense of a dream you have while coming out of anesthesia.

Did I miss something? Where did the second section of land and the gravel pit come from?

I guess I could go back and re-read and try to make some sense of it all... but really, what's the point?
