Actually, M. A. Baker was female. There&#039;s a persistent legend in one of my family lines that the song was composed by a musical ancestor, Mary Ann Godfrey DeFriez Baker, but the story seems to be (like certain other stories told by the grandchildren of that generation) made up.]]></description>
