We were always terrifying creatures to the British who were not receptive to our message. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who used the Danites and attached to them all sorts of mayhem, including murder and kidnapping in his first Sherlock Holmes novel, "A Study in Scarlet," is said to have been asked about his negative portrayal of Mormons in the book. His reply was something along the lines of "Everybody knows it's true, and no one raised any objections at the time (1887)."

If you've never read that, you should. It's surprising that Sherlock Holmes took off as a popular character after that. The Mormon portrayal really is something out of a Ron Paul conspiracy theory nightmare, and kind of overpowers the rest of the story. Fortunately, when BBC broadcast a new treatment of "Scarlet" for their current Holmes series, they left out any references to Mormons. I don't think the fear mongering plays out quite so well these days.
