I’m sure Hugh Cannon had some message he wanted to tell in this story, but if it turns out to be what we’ve been thinking it is all along….

The heck with Strunk & White. A Chicago Manual of Style has a lot more heft, and would leave a more lasting impression!

After the last chapter I was wondering how in the world the author was going to wrap the series up with only 2 more installments, when he was just going around in the same circles.

As a rule, I dislike heroines who inspire every man who crosses their path to fall in love with them, but I felt some sympathy towards Nell until this: “She would, therefore, permit Dick to show her attention and would give him just enough encouragement to head off anything like a love affair with her friend.” Yuck!

I can’t argue with this, though: “people who violate what they honestly believe to be a principle manifest a weakness which augurs poorly for future happiness”

The trick is in forming correct principles, I guess.
