I give you a chosen race, an affectionate and warm-hearted people, a responsive but timid and frightened folk, a simple group with childlike faith…a people who have intelligence and capacity to climb to former heights but who need the vision and the opportunity and the assistance of the nursing parents.

These people can rise to the loftiness of their fathers when opportunity has knocked at their door a few generations. If we fully help them, they can eventually soar to greatness.

I wonder, had this speech been given more recently, what political overtones it might have had when viewed in the light of immigration policy debates? Not all “Lamanite-Nephites” live north of the Rio Grande.

It’s as worthy of mocking as any pretention. That’s a different thing from calling someone on offensiveness that may have once been tolerated or underestimated but shouldn’t have been.

In six successive paragraphs he uses this device by highlighting two tribes each. It’s a very powerful and inspiring technique!

So much of this sermon resonates with me, yet some of its most basic assumptions simultaneously bother me. I don’t say that the begrudge or demean Kimball—only to highlight the complexities I mentioned above. Really interesting stuff. Thanks for posting, Ardis.

I can only imagine the reaction of the listeners in the audience. Even after 57 years, this is like a stab to the heart, and I realize that I still have things to fix in my attitudes and actions.
