I’m afraid you’re going to have trouble keeping Hal’s folks in their place.

Probably the result of growing up in the cultural South, and i know it wasn’t meant precisely that way, but i can’t read that specific phrasing as having anything other than a racially-motivated tinge.

All the literary sympathy for folks like the Morrells and “Alas, I was born a Morrell into a Janis family.” I don’t think I’ve ever seen sympathy for the Janises born into Morrell families. I’m an introvert who is stressed and depressed by mess and clutter. I think I’d go crazy living with the Morrells.

(Not moralizing here; my place right now would drive pre-epiphany Mary Janis into a snit too.)
