I've had almost all of the above thoughts while reading this series, especially about not teaching Kareen but expecting her to know and the naivity of Richard. As a quilt maker, I kinda understand Esther's longing to make quilts and thinking about making them often, but putting them away when there was a work to be done. I just hope ther is a really good explanation as to Kareen's background and all the secrecy about her!

Well the high point of that was the reference to the "sextette from Lucia" which I just had to play--good background music for this story.

Now, if Kareen can avoid going mad, killing Richard, and haunting the family in her bloody gown. Of course, if she can sing like Angela Georghiu, I'll forgive all.

Wasn't it unusual in those days for an unmarried woman to receive her endowment? If so, then Duenna's sitting outside the temple wouldn't have been that surprising.

Seems to me that Mother Haven and the long suffering Esther must figure that knowing how to do all the household chores are genetically transmitted to women. You'd think they might be a bit more willing to teach someone they can tell knows darn little about all that. If Esther has to look up "tibia" in the dictionary, maybe Kareen might have no idea that beets shouldn't be peeled, and that yeast starts had to be cultured.

And Richard, her husband, seems to be just as clueless, having married Kareen without really knowing her at all, other than her love for music. No one in the Haven family seems to understand Elder Wirthlin's "We can't all be piccolos" talk in conference a few years ago.

Still some elements of weirdness, kind of like watching an Ed Wood movie. You can't look away, no matter how awful, because you never know how much weirder it can get.

Curiouser and curiouser. I thought it was odd that her Duenna would leave without a forwarding address. And that she was raised for 17 years and somehow taught to be married in the temple by a woman who sat outside the temple at her wedding.

I believe there are a few plot holes appearing, but the story is engaging enough to keep interest and the plot holes are actually kind of fun to examine.

This story is so weird. I think my favorite things about it so far are the phrases randomly put "in quotation marks," and the obsession with quilts. I also admit to having spent the last 10 minutes thinking about what the modern equivalent of "the disgrace of borrowing 'a fresh start'" would be...
