It's been a busy week and has taken me awhile to get around to reading this story. Oh my! What a plot line! What characters!

My younger daughter has an ocarina. It's an interesting instrument and for all its simplicity is capable of making some intricate and beautiful music. There are many examples on Youtube.

Glad to see that the author was true to life--Esther, like Parson Weems's Washington and almost everybody in America these days, couldn't tell a lie--instead she had that cucumber laying overnight--no telling exactly what it was laying though.

And Hawaii, "formally accepted" as a territory--thus with lying words (or are they laying words?) is imperialism turned into Christian charity.

It's twenty years too soon--but it would be awfully nice if the unspoken surname were Romanov.

I have always been told that more strong young farmers died from the flu epidemic than weak city boys because the crowds of the city expose them to more germs. It doesn't make sense that being healthy would save him from malaria.

And why couldn't he tell his parents about his brother? This whole story is secrets and controlling people.

Hmmm, a Scandanavian name. That wasn't what I was expecting. Looking forward to the plot thickening!

(As an aside, the emphasis on all the animals being purebred is an interesting insight into the time this was written).
