It’s hard to believe how bad things were from our comfortable, well-fed existence here and now. Under those kinds of pressures, it would have been so easy for people to forget about their own group and turn inward, much less those of another country, much less again an enemy country.

When I worked with horses, I used to haul 90 lb. bales of hay. It was tough at first, but you get used to it quickly.

BUT those 100# bags!How did those thin-looking men handle those bags? I worked in the potato harvest in Idaho many years ago when it was mostly by hand, and even when I was young and strong, a 100# bag would have been a challenge.
