We may have been thinking or at least typing at the same time. Thanks for the detail and the song. Looks like it fits the tune of "Marching through Georgia"

Ardis, thank you. Very fitting for Memorial Day.The timing of the Instructor article was aloso good, just six months after the USA declared war on Spain which led to American forces being sent to Cuba and later to the Philippines. There was a struggle among Church leaders on the decision whether the Church would support the war, Brigham Young Jr. being strongly anti-war. In the end, Elder Young lost the debate and the Church supported the enlistment of LDS members in several units that fought in the war. In the Philippine battles near Manila, a nephew of Brigham Young, Harry Augustus Young was killed and a grand-nephew of President young, John Grainger Young was killed soon after.

One Utah soldier wrote the following "Battle Song of Utah":

Clear the guns for action, boys, we are strong and brave and true.

Rouse and do the noble deeds you came so far to do.

Strike a blow of vengeance for our murdered boys in blue,

While we are fighting at Manila.

          Chorus

Hurrah! Hurrah! for Utah and her crew.

Hurrah! hurrah! for Pennsylvania too.

We'll give them what we said we would, when we first donned the blue

while we are fighting at Manila.
