I think it is wild that this group of Mormon history buffs are debating and taking sides and analyzing a love story serial. Bring it on! Frankly, at this time I’m leaning towards Jeff because Delsa is in and out of his house and she loves the kids, and there is a familiarity about that situation. I’m not liking the way he criticized her without letting her explain herself, though. I don’t see her with Alex, and I think Hugh is a jerk. Who knows, maybe someone else will show up in a new chapter.

Can I just take a moment and say I prefer Delsa’s version of adulthood, where she is looking at who she would want with her for time and eternity, to Hugh’s version of adulthood (as represented,anyway), where it’s the needs and wants of “right now?” Guh.

I’m not a big fan of Alex but don’t forget the G.I. Bill and the general economic boom of post-war America. Him being a future unemployed vet does not mean his employment prospects are actually that bad.

Though there is also the worry about what the war might do to him, either mentally or physically. I have certain suspicions about the origin of my grandfather’s alcoholism and abusiveness.

True, Jeff is hurt, and maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on him – but he basically calls Delsa a liar about how her engagement with Hugh ended, and a hypocrite for earlier saying that she felt bound by her engagement. Jeff goes into attack mode so quickly it’s disconcerting.

This is so hard to call. Alex is not a member, no? That could be fixed, but as is, it’s a huge deficit in the groom dept. Bigger than being a future unemployed vet. The other guy has kids, a job, and stability. Hugh? He could show up with a homesick Aussie bride and wistfully gaze on what might have been, at most.

The mid-century social mores are also most interesting.

Well. I’m hooked.
