Charlene:
As I recall, he's engaged to a WAC who left on assignment without apparently telling him or even leaving him a note or a letter. I doubt the continuation of said engagement.

All I can say about today's episode is they must have taken engagements a lot more seriously back then! I can't understand why she thinks Jeff thinking less of her for being devious will be fixed by continuing to be devious.

I was really touched by the description earlier of Jeff's baby daughter and the state she was in before Delsa took a hand in things. My own little girl is about the same age and the urge to swoop in mother that poor little (fictional!) mite is huge! I confess I want Delsa to end up with Hugh more for the kids' sakes than his.

Well, if that doesn't get all your readers' romantic juices flowing, I don't know what would!

Maybe Ms. Burt had forgotten the wartime rationing by the time she wrote this story, but sugar rationing began in May 1942 and gasoline rationing by the end of that year.

So, how'd they make the cake and ice cream, and why did those girls drive to the church and back (twice!)?

I'd sooner believe that half the single men in town would fall in love with the same pretty girl.

What a cliffhanger! You'd think this was the perils of Pauline, but a little more romantic.

Aunt Martha had a huge chocolate cake.

Hmm. I can't remember -- was yesterday's "Questions from the Grass Roots" before or after this story was serialized? Was some percentage of the Relief Society Magazine readership horrified about Aunt Martha and the fact that she's leading the town astray by feeding them (gasp) chocolate?

watched them cut the towering wedding cake

Isn't this World War II? Someone remind me when sugar rationing went into effect. My grandparents had to scrounge up two cups of sugar for their wedding cake, and it was no easy task, but they were married near the end of the war.
