The story seems to try to be as realistic as possible, within the limits of a child’s adventure story, and then you get some bizarre thing out of Jules Verne.

Is that supposed to be based on something, do you know? (Giant squid?) Or is it just fantastical weirdness?

And, it looks like my theory (that the island boy was his brother all along) is wrong. I guess that would have been out of line with racial norms of the time, anyway.
