I never considered whitewash out of the context of Tom Sawyer, but I'm doing it now. Walls look a little dingy? Just slap another coat on! Fun for the whole family! Earth friendly, non-toxic, and with any luck lead free!

I'm loving that such messy life stuff was published in a church magazine. There wouldn't today be a bit about the daughter dating an older man who turns out to be a bigamist--today's church magazine only has the danger of dating a nonmember, and members in church magazine fiction are never so dangerous.

Seriously, I was expecting Quint's box to contain drugs. Even when he brought out the money I thought he was dealing.

Great Fiction situation--Anne so pleased that her daughter-in-law has caught on to the awful truth about her lack of education and depth--but doesn't confirm this truth in anything she says.

I love that when Anne reaches out to her children, it's never pious scripture quoting, or appeal to authority. It's open to Anne getting help from God, but her appeals are secular and effective. I'd love church magazine to have more modeling of effective persuasion in the kind of messy situations that really happen. Although as another commenter said, usually not so many in such a time frame in a real life.

I agree Ardis. The interesting thing about this story is how the situations are so much the same as ours, but are cast in a different period of time. And our struggles are usually spread out a bit.
