Without revealing too much autobiographical content, my father often appeared on Utah television. I was mystified by this as a child: was he in the in the TV box? Could he see see me as I saw him? He kind of implied he could keep an eye on me this way. (Remember this was back in the days of Romper Room where “Miss Julie” would claim to be able to see her viewers through her magic mirror.) One day I decided to conduct a test. I waited until my father appeared on the screen and then I dared—well the worst thing I could think of—to stick my tongue out at him. He didn’t bat an eye.

A big lesson on the limits of authority was learned that day.
