But, Researcher, I don't think Hamlet was posing a question of grammar when he asked "To be, or not to be?" So, what'll it be? With or without? : )

As to the issue you raise, I remember my mother telling of making "Seven Minute Frosting" in which her father would do the honors--whipping/beating it by hand for seven long minutes.

Thirty minutes? Surely she must have enlisted one of the children to help out with that!

That would be Coffinberry : ) . I imagine that looking at that recipe may as much as any of us are going to do, since it is so involved! I sometimes look in wonder at some recipes from my great grandmother and grandmother that involve stirring for lengthy periods of time, including a rice pudding that is stirred for half an hour, and wonder where they found the time in their busy schedules.

Wow. Floating Island does sound like a lot of work with a lot of precise timing.

From a quick look at the Ellis Island site, it looks like Stefan Capowski was probably of Polish ancestry, maybe from Breslau. Here is a website about Polish cookies, and it looks like the most likely options are #11 Cinnamon Cookies (ciasteczka cynamonowe) or #15 Heavenly Stars (Gwiazdki z Nieba) or #16 Sugar Cookies (Amoniaczki, literally ammonia cakes, referring to the use of ammonium carbonate as the leavening agent.)

Awwww. Sweet story.

And I had to go look up what Floating Island was. No wonder Mom was busy in the kitchen and maybe slightly cross. That sounds like a lot of work.
