Next time you hear someone mourning the passing of Relief Society autonomy, think of this story (a very realistic one in this regard). Autonomy didn't just mean controlling the purse strings; it meant doing all those things to fulfill the RS mission without most of the ward's support structure we take for granted today!

Wow. I just got back to starting to read these. Gasp! The horrors! She accepted a ride with a man not her husband! What must the busybodies have said!

This woman is raising small children, dealing with transients, staffing her organization, doing welfare shopping, trying to save the Holsinger's marriage. Where's the bishop? EQ Pres? High Priest Group leader? Compassionate service leader?

That's what can be so powerful about both literature and history, if it's done right, I think. You can make that statement, Carol, and too often whether people believe you or not depends entirely on their pre-determined politics and social ideologies. But when you can research the real stories (not just the statistics) of specific individuals, or even when you write fiction that has the power to make the reader care temporarily about a character who does or doesn't make it, then people can feel the truth in your statement.

This is so familiar. We live in the part of town with lots of transients. Three homeless shelters and half-way houses, and several old buildings that rent by the week. Many places that we don't visit teach without men with us. We help people then they go back to their old lives. Except that some don't, and that makes it worth it. But it's hard to keep perspective.
