I have always been very fond of the gates of Temple Square and was very disappointed when the Church had the east gates cut in half after the Church Plaza was opened, to create an open garden gate effect. Then came the free speech imbroglio and it became apparent that it would have been very useful to have the full size gates for security reasons. I believe that the day is soon coming when we will have a need to replicate the original gates and re-install them in the east wall. Perhaps even several sets made if a tall iron fence might be need around the Conference Center!

Great history, and nice touch that Robert Tschagenny had a part in both the original construction, and the renovation.

I don't think I have ever paid that much attention to the gates as physical artifacts, but there is something to passing through the gates that I notice every time I enter Temple Square. It's not the same as entering the temple, but there is for me a sense of passing through a portal into a more peaceful, quiet place. In that sense, I've always noticed the gates as a metaphorical presence.

Ardis: You have the great knack of telling us the most interesting history of "mundane" things. Who'd have thought that the gates would have such in intersting history? Thanks.

Nice post! I've noticed the gates many a time, but never thought a second thing about them. They are a great feature of Temple Square and match the location very nicely.
