Maybe it was new in the same way that everybody who buys a used car refers to it his "new car." It seems like a very large building even for the congregation shown in the picture.

But I know from my continuing patronage of the church library that no room can be both a "reading and recreation room," at least not at the same time. Today seems to be the day for EFY groups wearing their dorky t-shirts to come in by the score, flip-flopping and chattering and laughing.

Thanks, Ardis, for fixing the weird formatting. I read the interesting Improvement Era write-up on the chapel's dedication. The IE article seems to suggest that the chapel was new, while Jackson states that an existing church building was purchased. In any case, I learned that the chapel had a "reading and recreation room."

Looks like a different building or maybe totally redone.

I looked up the Ocean Park building in R. Jackson's Places of Worship (190):

"When organized on 16 May 1920, the branch purchased an existing Church building for which Frances D. Rutherford had been the architect. The building was added to and remodeled under the direction of Harold W. Burton, Architect, and completed and dedicated by President Heber J. Grant 24 September 1922. The glass in the windows was replaced with stained glass that was furnished by Mrs. A. W. McCune. The building was remodeled again and enlarged by architect Harold W. Burton in 1923.

"They were organized as a ward on 19 February 1923. Growth in membership was such that five years later the ward was divided. On 26 February 1928 they became the Santa Monica and Mar Vista Wards. The Santa Monica Ward stayed in the purchased building, and the Mar Vista built new as outlined below. In 1958 the Santa Monica building was added to; Russell Thomas was the architect.

"Again in 1985 the building was remodeled and upgraded, this time under the direction of Tyler and Woolley, Architects. By this time the building housed the Santa Monica First and Fourth Wards."

I noticed that the website for the Santa Monica 1st Ward features a photo of a stained glass picture.

Yes, Lost River Stake is the Arco/Moore area. The Big Lost River and the Little Lost River dwindle to nothing when they reach the porous sands south of Arco, only to reappear 200 miles west as "Thousand Springs" near Gooding.

One of my favorite Church camps--of the half dozen I've visited--is Camp Loristaca (an acronym for this stakes LOst RIver STAke CAmp). The Church's 99-year lease with the Forest Service for the site expired about 5 years ago and was not renewed :-(

Lost River Stake. Maybe it was somewhere in central Idaho, in the Twin Falls/Jerome/Buhl area?

The one about the YW "linking up" with the scout hike brought a smile. Over the years I've spent being a scout and YM leader, there have probably been at least a dozen times when we find out that some girls from the stake or the school are "coincidentally" camped nearby.
