queuno, the Fourth in Provo is spectacular — the parade and “Stadium of Fire” program rivals anything in the country in a city the size of Provo, or bigger. Even in the rest of the state, fireworks are really big. The big fireworks show in Sugar House (Salt Lake) was canceled this year because of expense … until a flood of small donations from individuals and larger ones from businesses restored the program, completely outside the usual taxpayer structure.

I don’t know that the Fourth in Utah is that much different from the Fourth anywhere else, or whether Cynthia’s memories are colored by the rosy glow of childhood. If you want to celebrate the Fourth in old-fashioned style, though, it would indeed be hard to beat Provo.

I’ll bite. What’s so special about the 4th in Utah? From what my Utah relatives tell me, the state saves its efforts for the 24th.

(Honestly not being sarcastic, genuinely wondering…)

I haven’t actually seen any fireworks, but I’ve certainly heard them all around my neighborhood. Me, I’m looking forward to the Boston Pops or some other band program tonight, playing all the music that everybody loves but that you never hear except on the 4th of July.

Well I’m jealous of anyone in Utah on the 4th. There really is nothing like 4th of July in Utah. San Diego isn’t too shabby, especially with so much military presence here, there are many who get really into it. But it just isn’t the same. For one thing, because of fire danger, no home fireworks. Not even kids’ sparklers! Now that’s a crime.
