I've read enough military history to know that "medicine" during the Civil War was only slightly more advanced than butchering cattle. (Leeches and maggots as medical tools? Yuck!)

Not only were these nurses hard-working and brave, but they also introduced basics such as sanitation and compassion to field hospitals everywhere.

Walt Whitman's memoirs or any biography of Florence Nightengale (who served in the Crimean War some 10 years earlier) show what these women were up against.

The top panoramic picture shows all the nurses who made it to Utah in 1909. I've cropped and enlarged a random section so that you can the faces of a few of these brave, wonderful women.

I'd love to see the photos. If you have Microsoft windows you can use "Paint" to open a .tif file and then save it as a .jpg. You lose some resolution, but for most purposes it is good enough.

I have a beautiful picture of the old nurses who visited Salt Lake in 1909. Unfortunately, it's a .tif file, which I can't upload to photobucket, and I don't know how to convert it to .jpg. But there's something wonderful about seeing the faces of women who were actually there.

I had no idea NAAN existed. Or that it was very hard to get along with Clara Barton. Then again, I have worked in enough hospitals to know that the more experienced nurses don't treat the less experienced nurses very well.

"Women... were entitled to small pensions and the right to be buried in military cemeteries..."

I'm glad to hear women received similar benefits to men back then for their service. I've actually wondered about this.
