The Utah War, the Pony Express and the telegraph, and very little discussion? Amazing! These are three cardinal events in our history. 152 years ago this week, my great grandfather, Andrew J. Allen wrote in his journal(Ignore his Kentucky spelling): "I ware at S.L. Citty heard Brigham say it was not wisdom for us to come into collision with the U.S. troops at this time, that if they would come into the valley we would vacuate this valley and all the northern settlements and move south." He did just that three months later, camping in a dugout on thre west side of Utah Lake.

In Feb. 18th, 1861, he writes: We get newse now from the states each week. (by pony express, evidently.) There are more states withdrawing from the Union.

HIs entry on July 16th that year: "There are poasts beeing set in the ground for a tellegraft, wier for the first in Utah. [Foreboding the demise of the pony Express and the ultimate bankruptcy of Russell, Majors and Waddell.]

I wondered if anybody was still reading. There are two more installments, then on to something else that may hopefully engage more discussion.
