Clark, actually, Alice Parker Richards is the daughter of Samuel and his second wife, Mary Ann Parker, who was the niece of Mary Haskin Parker. It is very confusing. Both Mary Haskin and Mary Ann had Johns for fathers. A missionary working with NewFamilySearch e-mailed me that the two Marys have been merged 284 times and she spends most of her time as a missionary trying to keep them separated before people merge them again.

Thanks for the this, Maurine. Samuel and Mary appear on my pedigree chart (through their daughter Alice Parker Richards) although I know very, very little about them.

How delightful that you are from Paisley. I didn’t mention in the post that Polly Aird included s few paisley patterns in her book, drawn by Peter McAuslin. He decided that the pattern makers were less likely to be laid off than the block printers, so he followed that path. His patterns are quite detailed.

Jeanne Thelin had me scan a picture of Mary and write a short history of her, which we put in an acid-free sleeve and put in the box with the shawl. That way, if anything happens to me, the shawl would always be identified. You should do that with your great grandmother’s scarf.

My grandpa photographed a ghost once. I’ve been trying to find a copy of the photo, but don’t see it in the collection. I’ll have to ask around.

I enjoyed the pictures and account of this lovely shawl. I’ve always been attracted to paisley.
It’s important, I believe, to write and preserve the history of an artifact, and the ancestor it belonged to.
