Interesting name. Clarence is obviously non-Hispanic, while the construction of the last name rings of peninsular Spain. Reminds me of a grade school pal with a Mexican father and Scandanavian mother named Lars Fernandez.

With the number of military campaigns that this guy claims to have fought in (Crimean, Maori, U.S. Civil, and Spanish American) there ought to be some miitary record--perhaps even a beneficiary listed.

Ardis, I seem to remember reading that Agramonte also did a three or four year stint as The Dread Pirate Roberts.

He evaded another bill by claiming it had been incurred by someone else named Agramonte.

Must've been his twin brother. Do you know why he came to Utah or is that another mystery?

Ha. When you say so much money was at stake, is that just for the two combatants, or was there also betting among the spectators?

In Legacy, an unimpeachable source of historical knowledge I'm sure :-), there is a passing reference to anti-gambling belief/practice among members dating back to Nauvoo.

Curious story. Agramonte sounds like a character out of a vintage Sid Fleischman book. The art of the tall tale.

What a character. In my mind's eye, I can imagine "Gen. Agramonte" sporting an exotic Salvador Dali moustache . . .
