“Pioneer Mother,” by Avard Fairbanks
The Instructor, May 1955

  1. Savin’ the best for last, I see. Wow – this is exquisite. Thanks.

(It looks like it’s a photo of stained glass panels. If so, anyone know where the original glass is located? Google doesn’t seem to know.)

  2. Hunter, if it’s still where it was in 1955 when this cover was printed, then it’s part of the DUP Museum in Salt Lake, a window in the building that is an approximation of the original Salt Lake Theater. The magazine says: “The artwork was contributed by Dr. Avard Fairbanks. The window itself was made by The Church Art Glass Studio of San Francisco. Chief sponsors of this art treasure were Viola M. Knudson and Isabelle Morris, in honor of their mother, Ella D. Morris. Thomas B. Child was their cosponsor.”

And yeah, I chose this as the best and deliberately saved it to last! (Tomorrow’s post features a painting, but not printed as a magazine cover.)
