Major Richard Young commanded “A” Battery of the Utah Artillery in the Philippines in the Spanish-American War. The Utah units were highly praised for their valor and efficiency in many battles and skirmishes in the Manila area. Two of Major Young’s nephews, John G. Young and Harry A. Young, were killed in the fighting. Major Young also served as an associate justice on the Philippine Supreme Court. Later, Major Young was commissioned a Brigadier General in World War 1 and led an infantry brigade in France. He died of appendicitis in 1919.

Barely on topic: I lived in R Hall at Deseret Towers on BYU’s Provo campus for one semester. IIRC, it was also (rarely) called Adam S. Bennion Hall.

FYI – Adam S. Bennion would serve in the Quorum of the 12 for six years in the 1950′s
