It has the value of what is sometimes termed “mass psychology.” People in large gatherings are swayed in their emotions by the spirit of the gathering, and people, who would not be touched by a private conversation, may be stirred in their hearts in a public meeting.

Sounds like the same tactics employed at any 1950s evangelist meeting!
