The real question is why Brigham Young’s message was delayed until Mr. H had been killed and was unable to send him the bills. You see, actually, there were two messages sent by Brother Brigham that day – the one that arrived at its intended designation first and the one that arrived only after the message of the first had been accomplished. Mysteriously, the counterfeit bills were never found – although a second undiscovered batch surely will prove that Utah’s entire early currency system (the keystone of its economy) was based on an earlier currency system invented by an associate of an associate of one of Brigham’s secretaries.

Those of us who have enjoyed Lion House Rolls more often than others have an even larger burden to carry, Jonathan. But you are, of course, correct: Brigham Young is responsible for every bad thing, and none of the good, that occurred anywhere within his sphere of influence during the 19th century, and perhaps beyond. The “not a sparrow fell” theory of history is alive and well in certain quarters today.

But Ardis, by his fire-and-brimstone preaching against Federal meddling, Brigham Young was lessening respect for the U.S. government and creating an environment where forgery could thrive. Brigham Young must bear some of the responsibility for every fraudulent scheme hatched anywhere in the U.S. during the 19th century. And all of us who have ever enjoyed Lion House Rolls must carry that shame with us always.
