Instead of the juvenile “attention getter” in the manual, I took three minutes to tell, as a story, where Joseph was and what he was doing, and how Oliver Cowdery came to hear of him and then go to his assistance, because Oliver’s story was the background for most of the scriptures we discussed early in the lesson. It’s a big class, with 70 years span in ages, but there was absolute silence while I gave the narration, with all eyes meeting mine. I tell ya, everybody likes a story! That caught the attention and set the tone of the class, then I stuck closely to the outlined lesson from then on. The class went well, with lots of participation.

Unless I see signs that the class is getting tired of it, that it’s too predictable to hold attention, I’ll probably use a similar three-minute historical narration to set the stage at the beginning of most lessons.
