Michelle, I would love to be able to share more with you and Keepa’s other readers … but I do not know where the original journal is. The extracts posted here were selected by Lafayette’s daughter Lucy specifically to tell the story of Heber’s last months, and that is all I have available.

Lafayette Guymon was my 3rd Great Grandfather and I would love to hear more of his journal as I am descended from his oldest son Marcus Lafayette who stayed in Utah so we lost track of his father and Phoebe after they moved to Colorado. Such a touching story of little Heber who Marcus Lafayette mentions in his history.

I believe Lafayett’s first wife was Anna Margaret Mortensen and they had 2 boys before James; Marcus Lafayette (1862 -1932) and Isaiah Couch (1863 – 1865) (according to New Family Search). The 1880 census has the family listed in the Piute County, Fremont Precinct, with Lafayette, 39, Phoebe (2nd wife) 17,Marcus L, 18, James N, 14, Annie E, 11, Enoch, 8, and Heber 6 making up the family at the time of this census.

Beautiful and aweful, thanks for posting it.

One line that struck me, “one day doctors will find a cure for this…”; and of course, he was right, and in our time juvenile diabetes is no longer an automatic death sentence. A foretelling of hope, though little comfort to the one prophesying.

I read with keen interest how Brother Guymon paused and searched his soul before he answered this question. This was a real question, and it demanded a real answer. And I thought it was interesting that the answer he felt to give was to quote the scriptures (as opposed to some pleasant aphorism or folklore).
