I've been watching (and occasionally searching) for it in the Salt Lake papers, John, since you alerted me to it. Neither Salt Lake paper seems to have picked it up ... but here's a link to it in the Anchorage Daily News.

After being rescued and having a while to build up his strength, Joseph with Alta (and Johnny) traveled to Utah where they spent about a month with family and friends….Joseph’s sisters largely in Ogden and Alta’s (Mahoney) family largely in Heber. Dad spoke of his experience at several Sacrament meetings and Firesides. Interview articles appeared in the Deseret News (March 7th) and the Ogden Standard Examiner (March 12th)1943. This week the AP has distributed an article ‘Gillam crash hits 70th anniversary’. This story of courage,faith and perseverence has a continuing message of encouragement to all who hear of it.

The book “Hearts of Courage” is Dad’s (and Mother’s) story and I have written it largely in Dad’s first person voice. It is an Alaska aviation and survival adventure but it is also a story of their faith, their love and their prayers answered.

Yeah — the book is written by Tippets’ son, drawing on materials left by the subject of this story (who died in 1968).

Amazing story. It is reminiscent of that horrible Jack London story we had to read in junior high school, “To Build a Fire.”

It also makes me feel like going and turning the thermostat up a couple of degrees.

And avoiding small planes.

And staying far away from Alaska.

This is an incredible story. I’m surprised that all four of the survivors made it after all they went through. I’m not sure I would have been that tough.
